CIPHE - Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering

The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) is the only chartered professional body for the UK plumbing and heating industry. Granted a Royal Charter, the CIPHE represents the profession nationally and provides routes to professional registration with the Engineering Council.

What CIPHE does

CIPHE is a professional body for individuals (rather than a contractor trade association for companies). It champions industry standards, runs CPD programmes, and offers progression pathways from trainee through to Chartered Engineer.

Who should join

Anyone working in plumbing and heating — apprentice, qualified plumber, technician, manager, designer — can find a CIPHE membership tier that fits their stage of career.

Membership tiers

  • Trainee - those studying for a plumbing/heating qualification
  • Affiliate - those with a relevant Technical Certificate or NVQ Level 2
  • Associate - NVQ Level 2 plus around a year of post-qualification experience
  • Member (MCIPHE) - NVQ Level 3 or experienced Level 2 holders
  • Fellow (FCIPHE) - senior managerial roles with Engineering Council registration (EngTech, IEng or CEng)
  • Companion - supporters of the industry without qualifications

Current tier criteria and fees are listed on the CIPHE website.

ProTech's perspective

CIPHE is the right choice if you're focused on the engineering and professional-status side of your career. Earning your post-nominals (MCIPHE) is a clear credibility signal, especially in commercial or technical roles.
