Heating systems are changing. With lower flow temperatures, updated regulations and the growth of renewable technologies such as heat pumps, installers need to adapt their skills. The Low Temperature Hot Water Heating Systems qualification has been developed to give plumbing and heating engineers the knowledge and confidence to design efficient systems that meet current standards.
This qualification is aimed at practising plumbers and heating engineers who already have a good understanding of central heating systems and want to extend their skills into low temperature design. It is particularly relevant for those working with, or planning to work with, low carbon technologies.
On completion, you will be able to:
Understand the regulations, standards and guidance relating to low temperature hot water heating.
Carry out accurate heat loss calculations for dwellings.
Calculate domestic hot water demand and design systems to meet it.
Size and select appropriate heat emitters for low temperature systems.
Correctly design and size full low temperature hot water heating systems.
Appreciate how layouts, controls and commissioning affect system performance.
The qualification is assessed by:
A multiple-choice test (80% pass mark).
A written assessment (80% pass mark).
Both assessments are centre-marked, with feedback provided to support learning.
The programme typically takes around 16 guided learning hours (equivalent to about two days of training).
Gain the knowledge to design modern, energy-efficient heating systems.
Build confidence to work effectively with low temperature and renewable technologies.
Demonstrate competence to employers, clients and certification bodies.
Use it as a stepping stone to further qualifications, such as heat pump system design.
You should already be working in the trade and hold one of the following (or equivalent):
NVQ/SVQ Level 2 in Plumbing, Domestic Heating, or Heating and Ventilating.
NVQ/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation or Oil-Fired Technical Services.
At least 3 years’ experience installing wet central heating systems, evidenced by manufacturer training or registration with Gas Safe, OFTEC, MCS or HETAS.
